Using Gmail on Android Device

You can receive email on your Android device via a Gmail account using the Gmail Android app. This allows you to check your domain email using the Gmail interface – which is convenient if you’re already familiar with Gmail. Linking your account to Gmail will also extend the benefits/integration with other Google apps, like the Calendar or Chrome browser.

However, before you use Gmail on your Android device for your domain email, you first must set up your domain’s email address as a POP3 and SMTP account in your Gmail account. Once your domain email has been added to your Gmail account, you can use the instructions below to set up your email on your phone.

  1. Navigate to the Gmail app on your Android device
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Go to Accounts > Add Account.
  4. Enter your email address.
  5. Enter your email password.
  6. Select Save.

    1. Ensure it is not set to leave a copy on the server. Then, you should be able to delete them from the device and it will also remove them from the server.

    1. It will depend on the email client you’re using on your phone. This is not a server side issue. You will need to either find a different mail client for your device that does this, or speak with the support team that provided your device to see if there’s anything further that can be done with the existing mail client.

  1. I have been using BlueMail as my email client, and it now seems to take a long time to load my emails. Is there another email program you can recommend?

  2. i tried setup of my mail on my note3 android phone but after filling the settings, it says authentication failed or sometimes it says server did nt respond

    1. Hello,

If you have multiple authentication failures your IP will eventually be blocked which will cause it not to respond, I would recommend checking to ensure you have the correct username and password for your account, The username should be your full email address. If you are still having issues with it I would recommend contacting Support to have them ensure your IP is not blocked and they can walk you through the correct settings and make sure your credentials are valid.

  3. Sending and receiving email through mobile phone is the best thing for all professionals. Most of the professionals use Email for the communication process. It is used all around the globe.

Sending and receiving email through mobile phone saves a lot of time as we can send and receive Email anytime. Though Email is very important, still there are many people who don’t know how to use Email, in that condition above article is very important.

Thanks for sharing such an important information with us.

    1. You will need to check your settings to make sure they are correct. The settings will be the same, no matter what device you use (pad, phone, PC, Android, IOS, Windows, ect)

  4. Hey!

I followed all your steps but it says POP3/IMAP access is not turned on for this account. How do I turn it on?

    1. Hello Vinay,

You will need to check your folder subscriptions. It will depend on how you’re looking at emails on your phone. This post shows how to change it in Gmail. Additionally, it mentions that the app named email should be automatic. If you’re using a different app to look at the email folders then you need to refer to its documentation on subscribing folders.

If you have any further questions or comments, please let us know.

    2. Hello Heidi,

If you’re having problems connecting to the email account using either POP3 or IMAP, double-check to see if you can access the account with webmail first. If webmail is working and you can send or receive emails through it, then it’s most likely a problem with the configuration of your email client.

Also, check to see if your domain name is pointing to our hosting service. If your name servers are not pointed to our service, then email will not work. If your name servers are pointed to us, then double-check your DNS ( using the advanced DNS editor) and make sure that the MX (mail server) settings are pointed to our service.

If you continue to have problems with connecting to POP3 or IMAP, then you should contact our live technical support team to review your account. Email service comes with each hosting subscription.

If you have any further questions or comments, please let us know.

  5. Hi,

My domain is hosted on inmotion server. Mail setting on Android is working but I am facing the following issue ::

    1. In Sent items no mail is displayed though in Inbox all mails are visible

    Kindly help

  6. Hi Tim, thanks for replying. I tried what you recommended and thisis what ive done: after settins it lets me choose which email, so I choose the one having this issue, there are no more settings option and there is no show images option, the only options are: default account, notification settins, composer preferences, signature, quick responses, display suggested addresses, clear address history, mainbox check frequency, days to sync, download size, sync email, sync contacts, sync calendar, download attachments, sync over wifi only, incoming settins, security settings, remove account. I have played with each of the options and nothing has changed

    1. I recommend contacting your phone provider, as it may be a known issue they have a solution or workaround for.

      Thank you,

  7. Hi! my email is receiving all messages with hyperlinks instead of regular pictures, I have a Droid Maxx. I have other accounts connected to the same app and those are fine, just the main one is showing the hyperlinks for everything. Id appreciate your help, is very annoying!

    1. I’d suggest reaching out to the Android community. It sounds like you may have a setting misconfigured within the set up of email on your phone. Try this first though, open email>go to settings> then manage account >then click on your email >then go to more settings option and make sure you have checked option to Show images option.

  8. When I go thhru the whole setting uup process; it says: cannnot connect to server. try again after checking network connection and enteed informatiion. tried few times already. what to do next?

    1. Hello Somnath,

Thank you for contacting us. I recommend alternating your email settings as a test. For example, if you are connecting using the non-ssl settings, try the ssl settings (and vice versa).

If your problems persist, review yourmail logs for record of the transaction.

Also ensure your MX records are pointed to the correct server.

      Thank you,

  9. Another option is to use “Google fetch” and import your other accounts into your gmail account to read all on all devices pretty easily

  10. This was written in 2011 and it does not apply to multitude of android applications developed by the various cell phone service providers as there is no Standard Android email application which applies to all those various droid phones now on the market.

  11. Hi,

I can’t set up on my S4 device.  Used all the right things and it still would not work. SSL, Port number, IMAP Serve is correct as well. Anything app related?

    1. Hello Mugi,

I was able to setup a s4 just now with no problems. Are you sure you are using the full email address as the username and the correct password? I would suggest contacting the support department of your host for them to watch the logs when you try to connect to the server. If they do this it will help troubleshoot and eliminate the issue.

      Best Regards,
      TJ Edens

    1. Hello Glen,

I would suggest contacting our support department so they may view the server logs while you are connecting to the server. This will allow us to see if it is a password issue or if your email client is resolving to an incorrect server.

      Best Regards,
      TJ Edens

  12. Tried all diffenrent combo’s with ssl / tls, port #’s and Mail. v.s. domain address. still won’t work on my GS5

  13. Good afternoon, I’m trying to link this email to my existing email w my apple device. Can ou walk me through it if possible.

    Thank you,

  14. I was able to get to most of the steps but once I tried to connect with the server it would crash, told me the server was not supported.  Am I missing something?  I have a S3 (will be upgrading in August to the S5 and hope it will transfer flawlessly)

    1. Hello Carol,

That is interesting. I tested a shared account with an S3, S4, and Note 2 and all connected fine. In this case, you may want to contact our Live Support team and let them walk through the process with you to see if there is something specific in your settings as the instructions and testing indicate it should work for you.

      Kindest Regards,
      Scott M

    2. Hello Lamkingsleyf,

Provide us some further information and we would be happy to help.

      Kindest regards,

    3. Hello Carol,

This article was written 3 years ago, so it is possible it may need to be updated a bit. As far as images, we can work on that, but I am not sure they will be exactly the same due to different brands and versions of Android out there. If you can explain where you were when you got stuck, we may be able to guide you from there if you wish.

      Kindest Regards,
      Scott M

  15. I’m trying to set up a POP account on my Android phone. I put in the same settings outlined in webmail-configure mail client (that subsequently worked in Thunderbird) but get an error message stating: Cannot safely connect to server. Could not validate certificate signature. Thoughts? Are there different settings for my phone?

    1. Hello Lauren,

More than likely your Android phone is defaulting to using a SSL (Secure Socket Layer) connection to check mail over port 995, and is having issues with a certificate mis-match.

If this is the case, and you’re using as your POP server. You’ll instead want to use your server’s secure hostname. You can find your server name in cPanel, and if your server was your secure hostname would be

The other option would be to turn off SSL encryption on the POP connection by using the default port 110 instead.

Please let us know if you’re still having any issues after giving one of those a shot.

      – Jacob
